The Mandalorian and its use of Boba Fett may be more interesting than I first thought.
Okay, Lucasfilm. You got me. I know tons of you out there have been saying for months that The Mandalorian is the future of Star Wars. While I agree that it seems like Lucasfilm has incited fan enthusiasm very well with the series, it’s never really excited me too much. Sure, I thought it was good fun seeing an off-brand Boba Fett and an off-brand Yoda hop around the galaxy and experience adventures.
Yes, there were plenty of good aspects to the show, but at the end of the day, it all felt a bit too…simple for me. It never reached the highest highs that some of the films reached for me, and I was worried that the franchise was no longer for me. Between its simplistic stories, relatively flat characters, and reliance on visual motifs we’ve seen before, I thought it might be my time to recognize when a show just isn’t made with my tastes in mind.
The Mandalorian Casting Rumors
This concern has slowly been solidified over the more recent months. In addition to the bland storytelling, I was worried The Mandalorian would grow overly-reliant on existing canon. That’s one mistake pretty much every film since the Original Trilogy has made. It’s relied too much on characters and events fans already know — and they have no way of living up to it.
And now, it’s pretty much confirmed that Ahsoka Tano and a host of characters from the animated shows will be crossing paths with the Mandalorian. Plus, we can’t forget the infamous Boba Fett being rumored to join, with actor Temuera Morrison returning in the role. It all seemed to confirm my worst fears. They would be relying too damn much on existing canon to pull fans in…which is B.S., in my opinion.
And the latest news from /Film dropped.
Timothy Olyphant’s Character Will Wear Boba Fett’s Armor
In case you didn’t hear the news, they claim that the Justified star won’t just be in the show, but that he’ll be wearing Boba Fett’s armor. Instantly, this seems like a recipe for confusion. How could he be wearing Fett’s armor if Temuera Morrison plays the character? And then, after reading the details, my imagination was set ablaze.
The outlet states that Olyphant will be playing a character named Cobb Vanth, who is a self-appointed sheriff in a Tatooine settlement. In the Aftermath novel, it is apparently revealed that he acquired the armor from Jawas. Wanna guess where they got the armor? Yup, near the site of the Sarlacc Pit.
The Possibilities Are Endless
So, what does this mean for The Mandalorian? Well, they have me interested. There are two potential directions this can go, and I have to say, both interest me. The first is that Boba Fett is dead, and that Cobb Vanth will be the new guy who dons the armor. The second is that Fett is running around without his armor, and that this could become an interesting point of contention at some point in The Mandalorian.
So, I’m being a hypocrite. While I don’t really want to see The Mandalorian feature Boba Fett, I do want to see an arc having to do with him attempting to reclaim his armor at all costs. And if that’s now how it shakes out, I like the idea of Fett simply being dead.
We do know Morrison is coming back to the Star Wars universe, but even the Boba Fett reports acknowledge he could be playing other characters. Rex is another clone character he could very well be playing, and when all said and done, we could go an entire series without Boba Fett actually being around?
In short, Disney could have their cake and eat it too. They can have a character donning Boba Fett’s armor, but won’t be beholden to creating a character that has to live up to that Boba Fett mythology fans have built up in their heads.
Regardless, I’m happy to say that this news has me all too intrigued. For the first time in a while, I see real potential in going this direction with the story…but what about you? Are you nearly as optimistic as I am about this Mandalorian Boba Fett news? Let us know your thoughts down below!
