The Rise Of Skywalker Removed A Subplot Involving Rey’s Lightsaber

While it made a brief appearance at the end of The Rise Of Skywalker, Rey’s lightsaber was originally going to be a much bigger part of the film. Wait, let me back up just a little bit. Below you can find a post from concept artist Matthew Savage.

The image, and video show an intricate prop of a lightsaber that shows where the weapon’s kyber crystal would be held. You can have a looksie-loo for yourselves down below.

It wasn’t needed in the end but we did design the inner workings and kyber crystal cage for Rey’s lightsaber. Drawn before we knew what colour the blade would be. Swipe for animation. – – – – – #lightsaber #propdesign #propdesigner #propmaking #3dmodeling #3dmodel #industrialdesign #filmdesign #madewithmodo #modo3d #conceptart #conceptartist #conceptdesigner #graflex #graflexflash #lightsaberhilt #lightsaberdesign #riseofskywalker #theriseofskywalker #industrialdesigner #starwarsprop #starwarsprops #darkreycosplay #reycosplay #reyskywalker #kybercrystal #kybercrystals

Now, back to the lightsaber having a bigger purpose in the film. According to a tweet from Phil Szostak, who is an art director over at Lucasfilm, the movie once contained a subplot involving Rey’s lightsaber that would see her working on it at points throughout the film. You can check out the tweet below.

The lightsaber was going to be in more than just one shot at the end. There was going to be a subplot throughout the film showing Rey working on it at her bench, using the Jedi texts as a guide.

This is the sort of stuff that interests me. The smaller, and not quite as exciting tasks a Jedi must perform. I think would have enjoyed this had it been included in the film. I wish we would have seen Rey go through a more traditional type of Jedi training altogether. And this is something we haven’t seen in live-action Star Wars content.

However, there is a deleted scene from Return on the Jedi showing Luke working on his lightsaber. I’ve included it below for your viewing pleasure.

Would you have enjoyed seeing this subplot included in The Rise Of Skywalker? Let us know our thoughts down below!
