Marvel’s Avengers Thor Was Influenced By Thor: Ragnarok Movie

Lead combat designer Vince Napoli says Marvel’s Avengers Thor was influenced by Thor: Ragnarok. Read on for more details.

You probably saw our coverage of Marvel’s Avengers latest gameplay footage last week (if not check related section below). If you did, then you got a good look at how Thor will play in the upcoming game. I have to say I wasn’t all that impressed by what we saw from the Mighty Thor. The gameplay shown looked like Thor was simply mowing down generic robot enemies, and didn’t have any way to defend himself. Perhaps there is more to Thor though, and the gameplay in general?

In a recent interview with IGN, lead combat designer Vince Napoli explained some more about Thor’s abilities. Napoli also explained how Thor: Ragnarok was a big influence on how they designed Thor for this game.

“There’s a scene in Thor: Ragnarok where Odin tells Thor that he’s not the god of hammers. The coolest thing about his combat is that you can trigger his Odinforce and [Thor can] electrify himself, protect himself, counter enemies. But it also has a unique property that it adds to every single one of his attacks. And it isn’t just as simple as, ‘Oh, it just adds lightning damage.’ It completely changes the impact or the effect that it will have on the enemy. So you can see what it does and modify each of his attacks.”

That’s pretty cool, so the power of Thor is in himself. Just like in Thor: Ragnarok, the hammer is just a tool, even if pretty cool one. We know that Thor has a number of alternate skins in Marvel’s Avengers, so I wonder if he will also have some different hammers other than Mjolnir? I’ll guess off the bat that you will be able to collect various different quality of upgrades for Mjolnir, but what if you can also get Stormbreaker? I have such ideas for how I would want this game to go, I’m just not convinced it’s going to work?

I enjoy looter-shooters like Destiny 2 and The Division 2, and I love the MCU. This game should tick all my boxes. Yet, when my friends and I looked at all the recent videos we were not sold by any means. I think Crystal Dynamics still has a lot of work to do in selling this game to me. I want to see what the end game looks like. Is there any longevity in Marvel’s Avengers, or is it going to a be a full-price game you pick up and complete the story mode once on? I guess I’ll just have to wait and see, but Napoli’s comments give me a glimpse of hope for Marvel’s Avengers.

What do you think of Napoli’s comments that Marvel’s Avengers Thor was influenced by Thor: Ragnarok? Leave your thoughts below in the usual spot.
