Legendary Comics Comes Out Swinging With A Championess Preview

Championess Preview from Legendary Comics

Often times we need to look no further than history to find compelling tales of remarkable people. I’ve always enjoyed the fact that in the pages of comic books, sometimes I learn that the persona that I am reading about is not just the idea of a creative team, but a real person that was able to leave a mark in history. But with our busy lives and being mind-controlled by devices sometimes their stories get lost. Now Legendary Comics has taken one of those people from history and put her story in the pages of a graphic novel.

Today Legendary Comics has released the first ten pages of their upcoming graphic novel, Championess. It’s written by Tarun Shanker & Kelly Zekas. With artwork by Amanda Perez Puentes. This series is based on the true story of Elizabeth Wilkinson, a female bare-knuckle boxer in 18th century London. Elizabeth and her sister Tess struggle to make ends meet and cover Tess’s debuts. While Elizabeth works doing odd jobs, her true passion is bare-knuckle boxing.

With her sister’s support, she trains at a boxing facility at one of the most famous retired boxers turned promoter named James Figg. As she trains, she confronts her personal demons that destroyed her family. Also, she is forced to come to terms with being the first half-Indian female boxer in a white male world. It is set to be available on books stores and online retailers on April 13th, 2021.

Last fall it was also announced that Championess is going to be adapted into a television series by the new UK-based production company Watford & Essex. A joint venture between Legendary Entertainment and acclaimed showrunners Emma Frost and Matthew Graham.

Below is the ten-page preview of the series. Check it out and let us know what you think!
