Last Of Us Part 2 Crashes And Burns…With Over 4 Million Copies Sold

Naughty Dog and The Last of Us Part 2 have indeed had their fair share of issues. Naughty Dog’s unhealthy crunch culture got outed in spectacular fashion, already putting them on the ropes. And then, a disgruntled employee released videos and full plot spoilers for the game. That really got the snowball rolling, with fans getting upset over plot points, supposed SJW agendas, and pretty every other typical thing people like to complain about. But there was no telling just how well the game would sell when it hit.

And then the reviews for The Last of Us Part 2 started rolling in. It became clear that critics were big fans of what the dev had to offer. In spite of all the drama, rumors, and spoiled plot points, it seemed like a win. But, of course, that didn’t stop plenty of overzealous fans from review-bombing Metacritic. Don’t get me wrong. I’m sure there are plenty of genuine negative reviews in there. After all, all art is subjective. But when they hit immediately and with scores of 0s, it’s hard to take it seriously.

There were plenty of gamers out there who were cheering for this game to fail. And fail it did.

The official PlayStation blog is reporting that the game only sold 4 million copies in its opening weekend. Sadly, that’s only enough to make it the fastest-selling PS4-exclusive game ever. Talk about disappointing for Naughty Dog, am I right? And yet, in spite of this massive failure, creative director Neil Druckmann still had the gall to thank the fans who helped the game reach that low bar.

“We are so immensely grateful to the millions of fans around the world that have played The Last of Us Part 2 and shared their experiences with us over the last week,” Druckmann wrote, no doubt in total shame. “We set out to tell a new kind of story, one that deals with difficult themes and would challenge you in unexpected ways. Hearing how the experience has resonated with so many of you and witnessing the type of thoughtful discussions it has sparked has been so incredible. We’ve also been so inspired by your creativity — whether it’s your gorgeous Photo Mode shots, jaw-dropping gameplay GIFs, or the songs you’ve recorded using Ellie’s guitar.”

The Last of Us Part 2 was made possible thanks to the efforts of the hundreds of talented and passionate developers here at Naughty Dog,” Druckmann continued. “We can imagine no greater honor than seeing that same passion mirrored by the people playing it. Thank you for helping us reach this amazing milestone.”

In all seriousness, this is a great accomplishment, and everyone involved should be proud of the game’s success. While this isn’t necessarily a game for me, I appreciate it when storytellers take risks with their narrative, and it’s clear that they took a lot of risks with this one.
