Amazon’s The Lord Of The Rings TV Show Calls Out For ‘Funky Looking’ Actors

After Coronavirus delays, Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings TV show is about to start getting underway again. The cast and crew are in for a massive shoot. LRM shared a story recently with some quotes from Galadriel actress Morfydd Clark. Clark revealed that the planned six-month hiatus had been canceled. This meant she would be in New Zealand filming for quite some time. Today a story from The Guardian that casting calls are out for a host of ‘funky looking’ actors.

The Facebook post by a casting agency (BGT) in New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland, asked for funky looking actors. They list facial burns, “long skinny” limbs, acne scars, deep cheekbones, facial lines, missing bones, large eyes, and skinny faces as desirable qualities. The post has been edited to remove any connection with The Lord of the Rings. However, The Guardian says the original post had the hashtag #lordoftheringsonprime. The Guardian reached out to the talent agency who refused to confirm if this casting call was for Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings show.

BGT has been casting extra’s for The Lord of the Rings since Peter Jackson’s movies. I think we can safely put the pieces of this puzzle together and determine it’s The Lord of the Rings show. Knowing a bit about Tolkien, and about how extras were used in Jackson’s movies, I feel pretty confident they are looking for Orcs. Orcs of course do not necessarily look like funky Humans. However, some added oddities can really help to shape the make-up and costume process around an actor.

For example, someone with very skinny, long limbs (like me) can be easier made up into a long spindly looking Orc. Orcs have existed in middle-Earth since the First Age of Tolkien’s mythology when they were created by Sauron’s old master Morgoth. Amazon’s TV show will be set within the Second Age of Tolkien’s mythology. The plot will (probably) feature Sauron’s rise to replace his old Master as the new Lord of middle-Earth. So yes, Orcs will be in plentiful supply. In parts of the Second Age, Sauron’s forces were far greater than those we see in The Lord of the Rings movies.

Of course, we really don’t know for sure this casting is for Orcs. It’s just very highly likely for now in my opinion. So if you live in New Zealand and think you look a bit funky or weird, why not try out for a little work as an extra on Amazon’s The Lord of The Rings TV show? I think I’d qualify, but New Zealand is literally the other side of the World for me. The show was almost nade in Scotland, my home nation, but in the end, New Zealand won the contract.
